Over dinner this evening, my 15 year old niece casually brings up the topic of house parties that kids at school are throwing these days. Which immediately prompt me to ask "Under supervision?" I think her shocked expression proved it otherwise. 15yr olds throwing unsupervised house parties?! "It's normal if you go to my school" she says nonchalantly. I will not mention the name of her school, but it's in one of the upper class public schools of the KL disctrict. I asked further if her parents or the parents of her friends knew of such shindigs, to which she stares blankly at me and then continues to say "Errrmmm....sort of". SORT OFF?! I know I will have to speak to my sister in regards to this "sort off" answer. Still, I cannot believe these school going kids are able to spend RM800 a night on a mansion with a pool with spiked drinks (goes without saying) and gambling involved. Am I really being uncool and not with the program? The irony is, introduction to Sex Talks - Precaution is Better than Cure, are banned from being introduced in the education system.....but go ahead kids, mingle and jingle intoxicatedly with the opposite sex! Sigh. What mix messages are we adults sending out to these children in the first place?

Oh, cut her some slack. This isn't anything new. I've heard of people in their 40s who used to go partying, let down their hair, go dancing and socialising at about that age, especially those from privileged backgrounds. Actually even more so, back then, when we were still had a lot of British influence (ie flower power) and had none of this conservative, straight-laced environment where everything is frowned upon.
Parents these days just need to trust that their child is doing the right thing and not indulging too much.
You inculcate them with your values and it is ultimately their choice to ignore or accept. Stifle, choke, and smother them, they'll just rebel and lash out at you.
